The Bridgewater Treatises were commisioned by Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater, upon his deathbed, to "Explore the Power and Wisdom and Goodness of God as Manifested in the Creation". There were originally eight treatises, though Charles Babbage wrote a ninth.
