Text in French. Beaumarchais [1732-1799] had a varied career as a watch-maker, inventor, musician, politician, invalid, fugitive, spy, publisher, arms-dealer, and revolutionary (both French and American). He was best known, however, for his dramatic works, especially the three Figaro plays. Emile Bayard was Victor Hugo's favorite illustrator, best known all over the world for "his" Cosette, now famous as the Les Misérables logo.
