The library of Durham Cathedral in the north of England houses a wealth of carved and inscribed stones. The bulk of these were discovered during the rebuilding of church walls within the area settled by the Angles. In addition, there are some Roman stones purchased by the Chapter. Haverfield and Greenwell were, in their time, recognized authorities on Roman and Anglian archaeology. In this book, they exhaustively catalogued the library stones from the oldest (8th century) to the recent (11th century).
