Grellman was one of the earliest writers to look specifically at Gypsy life in the late eighteenth century and from an analytical viewpoint for the first time. Publishing his Dissertation on the Gipsies in 1783, Grellman focused on the language, origin, image and work of the Gypsies, being the first to link their origin to India based on linguistics which was met with much critical acclaim in Europe.
