A French Huguenot potter, Palissy (c.1510–90), was a hydraulics engineer and craftsman. Having struggled for sixteen years to imitate Chinese porcelain, his legacy is that of the French 'Palissy ware' which Palissy referred to in the familiar manner as 'rustique'. Palissy's distinctive style of polychrome lead-glazed earthenware in a muted earth-toned palette, utilised naturalistic scenes of plants and animals cast from life.
