Expedition to reach the North Pole. Fridtjof Hansen was a Norwegian explorer, a professor of zoology and oceanography, and a prime mover in Norwegian's independence from Sweden. In 1893, Nansen and Johansen set out to reach the North Pole. In their ship Fram, they made fast to an ice floe to the north of Siberia. After drifting north with the ice, they left the ship and pushed further in kayaks and sleighs, reaching the highest latitude thus far (86ø14ïN) in 1895. This is the record of that voyage and the fifteen month sleigh journey, copiously illustrated and including several of Nansen's own sketches. It includes an appendix by the captain of the Fram. No air-support, no satellite navigation - just awe-inspiring determination and a wonderful read.
