Alexander Campbell made a journey from Edinburgh through parts of North Britain and remarked on Scottish landscape, with observations on rural economy, natural history, manufactures, trade and commerce, together with biographical sketches, relating chiefly to civil and ecclesiastical affairs. Thomas Garnett made a tour through the Highlands and part of the Western Isles of Scotland, Staffa and Icolmkill, the Falls of the Clyde, and of the country round Moffat, with an analysis of its mineral waters. John Lettice toured through various parts of Scotland, in 1792. In 1769 Thomas Pennant, who is well-known traveller and recorder of topographical information, was touring Scotland, which he published and was followed in 1774 by an account of another journey in Scotland, in two volumes. These works proved invaluable as preserving the record of important antiquarian relics which have now perished. Unusually Alnwick and other Northumberland towns are marked on the map.
