Balzac's huge production of novels and short stories are collected under the name La Comédie Humaine. A key figure in the 1890's the publisher Leonard Smithers was known best for publishing authors other publishers wouldn't touch 'with a barge pole' from writers and artists like Oscar Wilde and Aubrey Beardsley to outright pornography.
