A folio collection of classic 'gothic' novels of the type scathingly referred to in Jane Austen's 'Northanger Abbey' as 'horrid novels'. The seven volume set comprises: 'Horrid Mysteries', by K. F. A. Grosse; 'The Necromancer' by K. F. Kahlert; 'The Midnight Bell', by F. Lathom; 'Castle of Wolfenbach', and 'The Mysterious Warning', by E. Parsons; 'Clermont', by R. M. Roche and 'The Orphan of the Rhine', by E. Sleath. Gothic novels were usually set in castles or abbeys in mountainous regions like Italy or the South of France, and involve the heroine discovering dark deeds. These are what Catherine Morland in 'Northanger Abbey' calls 'horrid novels'. Heavy set – extra shipping needed for overseas.
