We discovered this original World War II poster in a box of old books bought at auction. And while the books were only so-so, we all fell in love with the poster. We loved the history behind it. And the way the simplicity of the design matched the simplicity of the message. But what a message! (It makes me feel better just reading it.) Anyway, we immediately had the poster framed and put up on display - where it drew so much comment, we had it reproduced for sale.Size: 60cm x 42 cm (23.5" x 16.5" approx.).

Well, thanks to the artistry of the superb artist and engraver, Harry Brockway, we believe our humble little mug to be just that, both useful and beautiful. Easy to hold in hard-to-break pottery, Brockway's lovely (and engagingly witty) engraving of our Station facade surrounds the whole. Available in blue or black on a cream background.

The Chris Donald Mug
The design for our tall, skinny mug - a gentle humorous 'take' on the landmark Percy Column opposite
the bookshop - was done by Chris Donald, founder of Viz magazine.

Knowing the quality of Ken's work, we immediately agreed. To the end that a few months later there it was, this charming hand-made book, which includes 23 hand-printed lino cuts depicting a whole gamut of shop customers - all equally recognizable as book lovers everywhere. Barter Books Gift Voucher

If you're looking for a sure-fire gift for someone (your parents, grandparents, partner, anyone!), our gift voucher might be just the ticket.
What you would do is this: you would send us whatever amount of money (big or little( you have in mind. We would then send the recipient a card (nice card! One with a reproduction of Harry Brockway's beautiful engraving of Barter Books across the front). Inside the card we would write in the amount given, along with your name as the donor and their name as the donee. (You can read more about the artist, himself, in the Artists' Commissions section of our site. But, just for starters, Harry Brockway has illustrated many books for the brilliant Folio series and is one of Britain's premier wood engravers.)
In the meantime, we will have written out a card with the recipient's name and address, which we will keep on file indefinitely here in the bookshop. Then, whenever he or she buys a book either in the shop or online, we will refer to that card and subtract whatever amount their purchase is from the original amount. |
