The Bridgewater Treatises were commisioned by Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater, upon his deathbed, to "Explore the Power and Wisdom and Goodness of God as Manifested in the Creation". There were originally eight treatises, though Charles Babbage wrote a ninth. 1 "The Adaptation of External Nature to the Moral and Intellectual Condition of Man", by Thomas Chalmers. 1833 2 "On the Adaptation of External Nature to the Physical Condition of man", by John Kidd. 1833 3 "Astronomy and General Physics Considered with Reference to Natural Theology", by William Whewell. Second edition 1833. 4 "The Hand, its Mechanism and Vital Endowments as Evincing Design", by Charles Bell. 1833. 5 "Animal and Vegetable Physiology Considered with Reference to Natural Theology", by Peter Mark Roget. 1834. 6 "Geology and Mineralogy Considered with Reference to Natural Theology", by William Buckland. 1836.
